Virginie GUIRAUDON

Virginie Guiraudon (PhD Harvard, 1997) is CNRS research director at the Sciences Po Center for European and Comparative studies in Paris. Her research initially focused on the comparative politics of immigration and citizenship and on the drivers and effects of the Europeanization of immigration, asylum and border policies. Her most-quoted publications on these topics focused on the importance of venue shopping in public policy. She was awarded the Descartes-Huygens prize whose tenure she spent at the University of Nijmegen. She has been Marie Curie professor at the EUI and visiting professor and scholar in various universities (Princeton, UCLA, Doshisha University in Kyoto, the CEPC in Madrid). She has been very active in promoting European studies, notably as executive board member of EUSA and the Council for European Studies and the European Political Sociology section of ESA, as chair of the ECPR Standing Group on the European Union. She is co-editor of Sociology of the European Union (Palgrave, 2011) and Europe’s Prolonged Crisis: the making and unmaking of the European Union (Palgrave, 2015). For her work on the EU, Virginie Guiraudon was awarded the ECPR Mattei Dogan Prize in European Political Sociology. She recently published “The 2015 refugee crisis was not a turning point: explaining policy inertia in EU border control” in European Political Science (2017). Throughout her career, Virginie Guiraudon has regularly reached out to a wider public through the media and other outlets. In 2018, she co-launched the International Panel on Migration, an IPCC on migration to convey the results of independent, interdisciplinary and international research on migration-related phenomena.
