Intercultural Workshop: "Unravelling Slavic Culture Through Language: Exploring Polish Culinary History"

On 23 November 2023, the Languages and Intercultural Dialogue Office will host its second intercultural workshop, focusing on Slavic languages. The event is part of a series designed to enable students to explore various languages and understand how they reflect culture.

During the workshop, several intriguing questions will be addressed: Why, unlike in other Slavic languages, do we call tea herbata? Is it true that dumplings used to be an appetizer? Which baked good was a gift for a woman after giving birth? Did pierogi ruskie really originate in Russia?

The Polish culinary lexis, influenced by Latin, Italian, French, German, Turkish, Arabic and Dutch, not only mirrors centuries-old cultural, linguistic, and customary intermingling, but is also an archive of the evolutionary processes that have shaped the Polish language over time.
