The Capacity Building Office of the College of Europe in Natolin was pleased to organise a Training on Diplomatic Protocol, delivered by Mr. Alexander EHRLICH-ADAM, Chief of Protocol in the Office of the Federal President of Austria.

In this training, students explored the importance of applying proper protocol guidelines when working in diplomatic services or international organizations. The course offered insights into the role of a protocol officer, including responsibilities related to preparing and accompanying high-level visits, organizing seating arrangements, observing flag etiquette, and avoiding diplomatic pitfalls.

The training introduced the definition and historical evolution of diplomatic protocol and examines its role in international relations, while covering key etiquette rules for professional conduct, such as meeting and greeting practices, communication manners, and proper introductions based on rank and seniority. Students learnt how to plan and host high-level visits - including formal ceremonies, seating arrangements, and invitation procedures - and will gain an understanding of ceremonial practices, including correct flag usage.

In addition, the training addressed how to navigate cultural norms and sensitivities to avoid faux pas and integrates real case studies, scenarios, and simulations aimed at developing practical skills for managing complex and challenging situations.
