The European Civilization Chair of the College of Europe in Natolin was pleased to organise “Meet the Author” event featuring renowned historian Prof. Roger MOORHOUSE.
An expert on the history of the Second World War, Professor MOORHOUSE is widely known for his influential works, including First to Fight, his acclaimed study of Poland’s 1939 campaign. His scholarship has reached broad international audiences and has contributed significantly to shaping public understanding of Europe’s twentieth century.
Across Europe, contemporary conflicts and alliances are deeply influenced by competing interpretations of the past - debates over identity, borders, sovereignty, and belonging. In this context, questions surrounding historical authority and responsibility are more relevant than ever. What makes historical scholarship rigorous? Who has access to competing interpretations? And what does responsible public engagement with history look like?

This discussion explored:
- The responsibilities involved in writing about contested and politically sensitive pasts;
- How to bring archival research to a broad public audience;
- Why historical interpretation continues to shape contemporary European politics.
The event also offered practical insights: How does one build authority? How can complex ideas be communicated clearly? And how is credibility established beyond the academy?
The discussion concluded with a Q&A session with students.
